Petaluma High School’s season-opening football game Friday night against Windsor will be played on Cardinal Newman’s all-natural turf. The game was moved earlier this week after Windsor’s synthetic-turf field was deemed unplayable. Kickoff for the varsity game was moved up a half hour to 7 p.m. The junior varsity game will still be at 5 p.m.

According to a report in the Press Democrat, the field has hardened to the point where it is dangerous for the players.

The problem stems from the deterioration of the infill which is composed of rubber pellets made from ground-up tires. The infill deteriorates over time and must be replaced. The Windsor field was installed in 2009.

Infill on the new field at Casa Grande High School is composed of cork pellets, rather than rubber. Casa will play its first football game on its new field Friday night against Napa.
