WINTER SPORTS: Casa boys win one of three in McKinleyville Tournament

The Casa Grand boys managed to sandwich a win between two losses in the McKinleyville Rotary Tip-Off Classic.

Casa’s Gauchos lost their tournament opener to Arcata, 48-25; bounced back to defeat KIPP King from San Lorenzo, 51-34; then fell to River Valley from Yuba City, 54-48.

Now 2-2 on the season, the Gauchos were scheduled to play at home against Benicia Wednesday before meeting American Canyon in the Casa gym on Dec. 13.

Braves win one

Tomales’ Braves came away victorious in one of three games in the Anderson Valley Redwood Classic Tournament played in Boonville.

Host Anderson Valley defeated Tomales, 59-41, on the tournament’s opening night. Senior Bryce Bianchi bucketed 10 points to lead the Braves, while Andy Azevedo and Carson Skavdal added eight each, Brady Woodward and Jake Ferndandez chipped in seven apiece.

Tomales’ defense was the difference in the Braves’ next game, providing a 28-25 win over Tulelake. Fernandez provided almost half the Tomales points, scoring 13. Azevedo and Bianchi tallied six apiece.

Hoopa Valley then overwhelmed the Braves, 74-29. Bianchi scored 11 for Tomales, with Woodward adding six.

Tomales followed up the tournament with a 63-50 win over Credo from Rohnert Park.

That win evened the Tomales record at 3-3 for the season.

Mustangs take two

The St. Vincent girls team took two out of three games in the Valley Christian Tournament played in Carmichael last weekend.

St. Vincent defeated the host Victory Christian Vikings, 47-35, in their tournament-opening game, taking charge with a 22-point third quarter.

Sullivan Henry led the Mustangs with 13 points with Clare Galten scoring 10 and McKenna Wilson-Kay eight.

Highland’s Scots rallied for 15 points in the final quarter to stop St. Vincent, 52-43, in the Mustangs’ second game.

Henry scored 12 points in that game with Wilson-Kay adding 10 and Alexandra Saisi eight.

St. Vincent took third place in the tournament by dominating Turlock Christian’s Eagles, 63-31.

Freshman Saisi led five Mustangs into double-digit scoring with 16 points. Julia Murphy scored 10, Sullivan 11, Alessandra Ditizio 11 and Wilson-Kay 10.

PHS scoring trouble

The Petaluma High girls team continued having trouble finding the net, losing to Livermore, 54-25.

Petaluma managed only single-digit scoring in every period.

Freshman Paris Buchanan led Petaluma with seven points, getting three on a shot from behind the arc, while junior Nichole Costa counted six.

Casa booters tie

The Casa Grande soccer team settled for a 3-3 tie when Mt. Diablo charged for three second-half goals.

Casa led at the half, but Mt. Diablo took charge in the second half to force the tie.

David Luis, Edwin Ajquity and Vincente Vargas scored for Casa Grande. Jacob Manning, Edwin Barrious and Luis provided assists.

Casa Grande is now 3-0-1 for the season.
