Sonoma Valley’s Lady Dragons pressed Petaluma’s T-Girls into submission, 44-20, in a Sonoma County League match played on the T-Girls’ court last week.

Pressing from tip to buzzer, Sonoma forced Petaluma into 30 turnovers. Petaluma compounded its problems by shooting 4 of 28 from the floor.

Sonoma Valley has a good team, but the T-Girls can, have and will play better.

Actually, the T-Girls did play better in the first quarter against Sonoma, using an aggressive defense of their own to jump out to a 9-6 lead behind Nichole Costa, who scored Petaluma’s first two points on free throws and later added a 3-point connection.

However, the seeds of T-Girl troubles were also planted in that initial period, when they committed nine turnovers.

After the opening round, the T-Girls found the basket a movable target. They managed just one basket and two points in the entire second quarter, and that didn’t come until the final minute and a half on a short set shot by Madeline Abramson.

Petaluma’s 5-11 sophomore center picked up her third foul early in the second quarter, and spent much of the period on the bench.

Still, Petaluma was within hopeful distance at the mid-point, trailing 18-11.

The T-Girls didn’t remain hopeful long. They went the entire third quarter without a basket from the floor, scoring just three points on free throws by Jadon Krist (two) and Kelsey Martin.

Led by 5-8 senior Kayla Field, Sonoma Valley blew the game open, reaching the fourth quarter with a 34-14 advantage.

Petaluma had just three points in the quarter, all on free throws.

It was more of the same in the final round as benches emptied for both teams.

Costa led the T-Girls with seven points, including the team’s only 3-pointer.

Eight Lady Dragons scored. Field led the Lady Dragon attack with 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Junior Amy Stanfield had six points and six rebounds, senior Alanna Johnston had six points and four rebounds, and senior Katie Stovall had five points and five rebounds.

Too much Montgomery

Petaluma also got in over its talent head against North Bay League power Montgomery, losing a non-league game at home Monday night, 73-30.

Montgomery, one of the best teams in the North Bay and the North Coast Section, jumped out to a 23-1 first-quarter lead.

The bright spot for the T-Girls was scoring from a number of different players, with Courtney leading the way with eight points, including a pair of treys.

Krist scored seven, Martin four, Kaileigh Pate three and Costa, Angelina Scaccalosi, Emily O’Keefe and Ava Chabot two apiece.

Petaluma is now 5-12 on the season and 1-1 in Sonoma County League play.
