Captains lead Casa girls to victory

Casa Grande’s team captains lead the Lady Gauchos to a 52-45 win over Rancho Cotate.|

The leaders led big-time for the Casa Grande High School girls basketball team last week as Casa’s Lady Gauchos defeated Rancho Cotate’s Lady Cougars, 52-45.

Team captains Mia Cain, Cassidy McKinney and Hannah Sullivan all came up big for the Lady Gauchos in the much-needed win.

Cain scored 18 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. McKinney added 16 points and had six assists and six steals.

Sullivan scored 12 points, on four 3-point connections.

Rancho Cotate surprised Casa early, jumping out to an 18-11 first-quarter lead. The Lady Gaucho defense took over in the second period, holding the Lady Cougars to just four points. Still, Casa trailed, 22-20, at the mid-point.

The Lady Gauchos came out strong in the second half, outscoring Rancho 32-23 over the final two periods.

The vastly improved Lady Cougars are 9-8 on the season, but only 1-5 in the very competitive NBL.
