Petaluma High School’s Trojans not only took to the mat, but ruled the mat in the Sonoma County League Wrestling Championships held Saturday at Sonoma Valley High School.

After going undefeated in league dual competition, Petaluma won the league tournament to clinch its first league wrestling championship in 15 years.

It took a total team effort for Petaluma to hold off Sonoma Valley for the tournament title. The Trojans totaled 235 team points to 213 for tournament host Sonoma. The leaders were followed by Healdsburg (170), El Molino (96), Elsie Allen (66.5), Analy 54 and Piner 28.

While winning as a team, Petaluma also enjoyed tremendous individual success, qualifying 10 wrestlers out of 14 weight classes for next weekend’s North Coast Section Tournament.

No Trojan wrestler finished lower than fifth in the tournament.

The top three in each weight class qualify for the NCS Tournament to be held at James Logan High in Union City.

Petaluma’s team effort was needed to top Sonoma Valley’s Dragons, who also qualified 10 wrestlers for NCS and had four league champions.

Petaluma crowned three champions at the SCL Tournament.

Connor Pedersen beat Sonoma Valley’s Macklyn Liss in the 128-pound finals.

Colton Prieto won over Elsie Allen’s Allen Aguirre in the 140-pound finals.

Curtis Goughnour beat Sam Williams of Healdsburg in the finals of the 154-pound class.

Three more Trojans reached the finals, finishing second.

Other third-place finishers for the Trojans were Charlie Winter at 115 pounds, Dominic Ayers at 162 pounds, Dan DeCarli at 197 pounds and Derek Honey at 220 pounds.
