Petaluma’s O’Neill chosen SCL’s best defender

Petaluma High’s Brendan O’Neill has been chosen by the Sonoma County League coaches Co-Defensive Most Valuable Player.|

Petaluma High School’s on-court engine, junior Brendan O’Neill, is the Sonoma County League Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He shared the honor with Spencer Vogel of Analy.

O’Neill was a huge reason Petaluma tied for second in the SCL with an 8-4 record. He was given the assignment to guard the opposition’s most potent offensive threat, and generally held them to well below their season’s scoring average.

He also was a catalyst on offense, unafraid to drive to the hoop against the biggest of defenders.

Petaluma High School’s big man, 6-foot-8 Joey Potts, was placed on the All-League first team. Potts, a senior, led Petaluma in rebounding, was one of the team’s top scorers, and not only was a shot blocker, but also a strong defender who forced opposing players to alter or, often, abandon their drives to the basket.

Senior Austin Paretti was picked to the second team. Paretti was a dangerous outside shooter as well as a quality ball hander and defender for the Trojans.

Junior Trey Davis, a transfer from St. Vincent High School who was ineligible until after the winter break, received honorable mention notice. When he was able to play, Davis provided a spark for the Trojans with his energy, defense and ability to drive to the hoop.

Analy teammates Aiden Toner-Rogers and Dominic Tripodi were league Co-Most Valuable Players.

Analy’s Brett Page was Coach of the Year.
