The Casa Grande High School baseball team went bat bonkers in a 22-4 thrashing of Montgomery’s Vikings last week in a game played on the Viking diamond.

Casa scored 14 runs in the first inning before Montgomery even came to bat. In that wild inning, Casa Grande cracked 13 hits, including three home runs and five doubles.

Since there is no 10-run rule in the NBL, the teams played the full seven innings.

For the game, the Gauchos had 22 hits, including two home runs each by John Green and Chris Joaquim. One of Green’s blasts was a grand slam that highlighted the first-inning bombardment.

Green had four hits in the game, scored three runs and drove home six. Torkelson had three hits, with a pair of doubles to go with his homer, scored two runs and drove in three. Joaquim drove home five runs with his two homers and also scored three runs. Smith had a double to go with his homer scored two runs and drove in two. Max Cerini doubled and singled and drove in three runs. AJ Miller doubled and scored twice and drove in two runs. Hayden Klemenok had three hits, including a pair of doubles and drove in three runs. Eddie Bermudez belted a pair of singles and scored two runs.

After the first-inning bombardment, pitching life was a stroll to the hill for Casa hurlers. Nik Kamages started and pitched two innings, allowing two hits and three runs, only two earned. He walked three and struck out one. Broc Burleson went three innings, allowing a hit and a walk, while striking out two. Parker Ruoff pitched two innings, giving up one run and one hit, while walking one and striking out four.

Earlier in the week, Joaquim continued to rule on the mound for Casa Grande, pitching six innings of two-hit baseball to stop Windsor’s Jaguars, 7-0, in a North Bay League contest played in Windsor.

Joaquim walked just one and struck out six. Brian Kolodin finished up with a perfect seventh inning.

After scoring a run in the first inning, Casa Grande broke the game open with five runs in the third.

The Gauchos had seven hits by seven different batters with Eddie Bermudez, Cerini, Green, Smith, Miller, Torkelson and Quinton Gago all contributing safe blows.

Smith and Torkelson both slammed home runs.

The twin wins gave Casa Grande a 12-4 overall record and a 7-1 league mark.
