Casa Grande’s boys turned in a strong team performance but didn’t have enough overall strength to dethrone Maria Carrillo in the North Bay League track championships held on a wind-swept Friday night at Santa Rosa High School.

Maria Carrillo maintained a stranglehold on the NBL championship, scoring 168 points to 95.5 for the Gauchos. Following were Montgomery (90), Santa Rosa (54), Windsor (45), Ukiah (22), Cardinal Newman (20.5) and Rancho Cotate (0).

On the girls side, Casa was fourth with 56, behind champion Maria Carrillo (195.5), Montgomery (87), Santa Rosa (80.5) and followed by Cardinal Newman (35), Windsor (35), Ukiah (7) and Rancho Cotate (2).

Casa Grande’s boys built much of their success on points earned in the field events.

Dulio Froes had a spectacular 41-foot, 4½-inch triple jump to go more than a foot farther than second-place Mason Adams of Maria Carrillo, who went 40-2½. Casa’s David Alviso also jumped over 40 feet, finishing third at 40-2. Kyle Sutton qualified for advancement with a sixth-place leap of 39-1.

Froes was followed by Casa qualifiers Cole Kuper (19-2½), Alviso (19-0½) and Kyle Sutton (18-9½). Alviso also qualified in the high jump, tying for fifth with a leap of 5-8.
