New Casa Grande High School football coach Denis Brunk has filled out his first staff with several coaches who followed him to Casa from Santa Rosa High were he coached last season and several more from Tomales High School where he played his own high school football.

Scott Lowe, who worked with Brunk at Santa Rosa where they combined to lead the resurgent Panthers to the school’s first North Coast Section win, will be the offensive coordinator.

John Mitchell, a long-time Tomales High School coach, will serve as defensive coordinator.

Mitchell will work on defense with former Tomales High School head coach Leon Feliciano, who made the Braves a small-school power during his time at Tomales. Feliciano was so successful and so respected that he was chosen to the Marin County Athletic Hall of Fame. He will coach the defensive line.

Brunk brings with him from Santa Rosa Marcus Ezeff one of the best defensive backs and receivers ever in the North Bay while a prep at Montgomery High. He went on to a standout career at the University of California. He will coach the defensive backs along with long-time Petaluma high school and youth coach Marcel Lawson.

Frank Giammona returns to coach the offensive line. Giammona is a long-time Brunk friend. The two played together at Tomales High School where Giammona was the center and Brunk the quarterback. “I said before I came to Casa that Frank is the best line coach in the area,” said Brunk.

Jared Jackson will work with the receivers, while Nick Sherry is back at Casa Grande to coach the quarterbacks. He is regarded as one of the best quarterbacks ever at Casa Grande. He went on to play at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Brett Matthews, another coach with Tomales ties, will work with the special teams.

Trey Fitzgerald will coach the junior varsity team with help from Matt Martin, Chris Weaver, Spencer Finkbohner, John Lewis and John Homan.

Casey Awohi is the freshman coach with help from Holland Tracey and Carlos Perez.

“I’m very pleased with the coaches,” Brunk said. “We’re all working well together. Egos are left at the door.”
