Trojans and Gauchos get to hit real opponents in scrimmages

Petaluma High School and Casa Grande High School football players get their first chance to hit someone in a different uniform this week in scrimmages just a week before the start of the season.

Petaluma will host its traditional four-way scrimmage Friday evening, but tradition will have a couple of different twists. It will be held at Casa Grande, as will all Trojan “home” games this season as the Petaluma field undergoes major renovations, including the installation of a new synthetic turf.

And, this year Windsor joins traditional participants San Marin and Maria Carrillo in the affair. Windsor replaces Montgomery who will be Petaluma’s season-opening opponents on Aug. 25.

Junior varsities will scrimmage at 5e p.m., followed by the varsities at 7:30.

Last week, Petaluma players faced off against one another in an inter-squad scrimmage.

“It went well,” said Petaluma coach Rick Krist.

“By the end of this week’s scrimmage we’ll be able to find out where we’re at and what we need to work on.”

Saturday, Petaluma will host a freshman scrimmage with San Marin and Casa Grande participating. That will also be on the Casa field.

Casa Grande’s varsity goes to American Canyon High School Saturday to scrimmage against the host and Elk Grove. The junior varsity event starts at 3 p.m. with the varsity scrimmage beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Casa Grande held its traditional Green and Gold scrimmage last Saturday and coach Denis Brunk was pleased with what he saw.

“It went very well,” he said. “I saw some good things. There were some players who moved up on the depth chart.”

The coach noted that the coaches grade themselves as a staff based on the performance of the players.

“We gave ourselves a C, so we have some work to do to get up to an A,” he said.

St. Vincent will skip its normal scrimmage at El Molino this season. The Mustangs have only 27 players out for both the varsity and junior varsity teams and coach Gary Galloway doesn’t want to chance an injury prior to the St. Vincent opener on Aug. 25 at Elsie Allen.
