Wrestlers get ready for league tourneys

Petaluma High wrestlers will be at Healdsburg for the Sonoma County League championships while Casa Grande wrestlers will be at Montgomery for the North Bay League chamionships.|

The high school wrestling season comes to a climax Saturday with championship tournaments for both the North Bay and Sonoma County leagues.

The SCL championships will be at Healdsburg with Petaluma going into the match with the upper hand for the league title after battling through the dual season undefeated.

The NBL tournament will be at Montgomery, with Windsor the favorite after beating Casa Grande, 58-21, last week.

At stake are not only team championships, but spots in the North Coast Section championships coming up Feb. 23-24 at James Logan High School in Union City.

Girls NCS

Three area girls qualified for the state meet in the North Coast Section championships.

Petaluma High’s Brooklyn Shattuck finished third at 101 pounds to qualify for the state meet.

Two Casa Grande wrestlers finished second, Brigette Mihalca and Lillian McCoy, earning spots in the state meet.

For Petaluma, Cindy Diaz at 106 pounds and Alyssa Archer at 121 pounds both placed fifth.

Citlalle Calderon at 116 pounds, Logan Pomi at 131 pounds and Sarah Markovich at 170 were all just one win away from placing. Sunshine Sather also competed.

For Casa Grande, Arora Vieira placed seventh, while freshmen Skyler Finley and Kaia Stites also competed.

NCS duals

Petaluma won one match out of three in the North Coast Section dual competition.

The Trojans defeated Del Norte, 49-30, but lost to North Bay League power Windsor, 57-24, and Fortuna, 42-34.
