Trojans win SCL mat tourney

Petaluma High School clinched the Sonoma County League wrestling championship by winning the SCL Tournament, while several wrestlers from both Petaluma and Casa Grande qualified for advancement to the North Coast Section Tournament.|

The high school wrestling season climaxed with Petaluma clinching the Sonoma County League championship and the Trojans and Casa Grande Gauchos advancing a bundle of wrestlers to the North Coast Section championships coming up Friday and Saturday at James Logan High School in Union City.

Heading to the NCS Tournament from the SCL champion Trojans are Nick Trave (106 pounds), Charlie Winter (120), Matt Shattuck (126), Connor Pedersen (132), Liam O’Niell (138), Colton Prieto (145), Curtis Goughnour (152), Tony Vitali (160), Derrick Poimi (170), Chris Olvera (182), Fernando Marshall-Rodriguez (195), Dan DeCarli (220) and Derek Honey (285).

Petaluma qualified a wrestler in every weight class except 113 pounds.

Moving on to the NCS Tournament from Casa Grande are: Colin Hillard (106), Elias Drohan (120), Dominic Green (126), Aaron Krupinsky (145), Sean Lopez (152), Caleb Wood (160), Tannor McKinney (170), Justin Naugle (182) and Jack Faris (285).

Wrestling in the SCL Tournament at Healdsburg, Petaluma put the finishing touches on a perfect league season by totaling 283.5 points to 164 for runner-up Sonoma. Healdsburg (126), Piner (99), Analy (82), El Molino (56) and Elsie Allen 952) followed.

Winter, Shattuck, O’Niell, Prieto, Vitali, Pomi, Olvera and Marshall-Rodriguez all won their respective weight classes for the Trojans.

Trave, Goughnour and Honey reached the finals and finished second.

DeCarli finished third.

Wrestling in the North Bay League finals at Montgomery, Casa Grande finished fourth as a team with 129.50 points behind league champion Windsor (221.50), Ukiah (173) and Cardinal Newman (136). The Gauchos were followed by Maria Carrillo (89), Santa Rosa (76), Rancho Cotate (72) and Montgomery (44).

Green, McKinney and Naugle all wrestled into the finals for the Gauchos and finished second.

Hilliard, Wood and Faris each finished third.

Drohan, Krupinsky and Lopez each finished fourth.
