Petaluma man, 74, hospitalized in bicycle vs. bus

A 74-year-old Petaluma cyclist suffered head trauma today after overshooting a turn to merge onto East Washington Street and colliding with the side of a Petaluma Transit bus, according to the Petaluma Police Department.

The man reportedly told police that he was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk near the intersection of Edith Street when he made a maneuver to enter the roadway. The man said he rode too far out into the road and collided with the right side of the bus, an anecdote that police said was later corroborated through the bus’s on-board video.

Petaluma police and the Petaluma Fire Department responded to the scene of the accident at 2:55 p.m. The man was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment, and police said his condition is currently unknown.

None of the six passengers on the bus at the time of the incident sustained injuries. Westbound traffic was shut down for approximately 20 minutes during an investigation of the incident, police said.
