ALTERBEAST and GRINDMOTHER
Don’t you just LOVE the names of the bands that play the Phoenix Theater? To many Petalumans, the band names that regularly appear on the Phoenix marquee are a whole genre unto themselves. People actually note, upon hearing some odd phrase like “Bunny Hammer” (an actual video game) or Pink Popsicle Apocalypse (we just made that up), “Wow! Sounds like the name of a band that would play the Phoenix!” Anyway, this weekend, the Phoenix welcomes Sacramento bands Alterbeast and Grindmother. The latter is a hardcore band from Ontario, Canada, fronted by a 68-year-old metal-head grandmother who also goes by the name of Grindmother, and whose debut album is titled “Age of Destruction.” The former, Alterbeast, are purveyors of a musical style they describe as “Tech Death Powerhouse,” which, come to think of it, would be a great band name. If such a band turns out to exist, it’s only a matter of time till they get their name up on that marquee at the Phoenix Theater. 7 p.m. $14 - $17. 201 E. Washington St. ThePhoenixTheater.com.
