Petaluma Bestseller List: ‘Best’ triumphs, ‘Ivy & Bean” conquers “Dog Man”

What books are your neighbors reading this week?|

The top-selling titles at Petaluma’s Copperfield’s Book Store, for the week of Sept. 10-16, 2018.

Oh, how fickle we readers are. Or perhaps we’re just voracious, always hungry for the next great book.

Last week’s No. 1 bestseller, Ken Kwan’s “Crazy Rich Asians,” is now gone from the list, though for what it’s worth, that book’s sequel, “China Rich Girlfriend,” has now shown up in the No. 10 spot.

Best guess why? Folks who went to see the box-office smash movie adaptation of the first book, after picking up the novel to soak up more of the story’s addictive wealthy characters, have now moved on to the next book in the series.

Meanwhile, this week’s No. 1 is Berkeley author-artist Thi Bui’s sensational “The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir,” describing the writer’s harrowing exodus from Vietnam in the 1970s.

On the Kids and Young Adults list, last week’s No. 1 and No. 2 have swapped places, with “Ivy and Bean: One Big Happy Family” (by Annie Barrows and Sophie Blackall) bumping Dav Pilkey’s “Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas,” down a notch.

Elsewhere on the list, S.E. Hinton’s indelible 1967 novel “The Outside” has fought its way from library land onto this week’s list (in the No. 3 spot), and “Voyage of the Dogs,” by Greg Van Eekhout - who’ll be appearing at Copperfield’s this Friday night - sails into the No. 6 spot.
