AN EVENING FOR COURTNEY -

A fundraiser for Petaluma woman

battling cancer

Friday, Sept. 21, 5-8 p.m.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? Courtney Whalen’s battle with aggressive throat cancer gets a helping hand with this benefit event sponsored by the Fabulous Women of Sonoma County, and assisted by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. The local television personality has donated the use of his portable pizza oven (and the staff to go with it) to make gourmet pizzas for all attendees. Additionally, he’s offered a one-of-a-kind silent auction prize: a chance to meet him on the set of his “Grocery Games” T.V. show. Other auction items include Giants memorabilia and a private tour of Pixar Studios. The event will include food from the Marshall Store Oyster Bar and Stemple Creek.

WHO DOES IT HELP? Funds raised will go to assist Courtney’s family during this difficult (and expensive) time, as she undergoes chemotherapy in San Francisco.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD WE KNOW? The event takes place at Synergy Health Club, 1201 Redwood Wy. Attendance is free, with numerous opportunities to donate through raffles, auctions, etc.

DANCE FOR HUMANITY -

Benefit for Doctors w/o Borders

Sunday, Sept. 23, 3:30-6 p.m.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? The Jubilee Klezmer Ensemble presents its third annual Dance For Humanity at Petaluma’s First Presbyterian Church, 939 B. St. An afternoon of high-spirited klezmer music and dance (complete with a dance instructor to tech you the steps), will include food and (non-alcoholic) drinks, and much more.

WHO DOES IT HELP? All funds raised will go to Doctors Without Borders, an international nonprofit devoted to bringing trained medical professionals (all of them volunteers) into remote, war-torn and inaccessible countries in need of doctors, nurses and others. DoctorsWithoutBorders.org.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD WE KNOW? Admission is a sliding scale between $35-$75, with ticket price including food and drink, and dance lessons. To purchase tickets visit DanceForHumanity.brownpapertickets.com.

STAND UP FOR BERGIN -

A paddle event to benefit Bergin

University of Canine Studies

Saturday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m.

WHAT’S HAPPENING? If you’ve ever wanted to participate in a paddle-boarding competition, this is your chance. Events will include a four-mile race on the Petaluma River and a two-mile paddle in the Petaluma Estuary. Dogs are welcome to join and lessons will be provided in advance for both human and canine participants. Refreshments, activities and an award ceremony will follow. Participants can rent equipment from Petaluma Stand Up Paddle.

WHO DOES IT HELP? Bergin University will soon be relocating from Rohnert Park to the former Penngrove Green Mill Inn. The initiative is spearheaded by students in the Associative of Science program at Bergin in hopes of kick-starting a relationship with the community and raising funds for training programs.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD WE KNOW? Cost ranges from $45-$60. Petaluma Stand Up Paddle, 775 Baywood Drive.
