Car drives on SMART tracks in Petaluma, delays service

‘When cars drive onto the tracks, the vehicle gets stuck because the tracks are not designed for cars,’ a SMART spokesperson said early Friday.|

A car that got stuck on the tracks in Petaluma delayed Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit’s service for about an hour and a half Friday morning, a spokeswoman for the railway said.

At about 5 a.m., a car drove on the SMART tracks from McDowell Boulevard and got stuck, SMART spokeswoman Jeanne Belding said.

“When cars drive onto the tracks, the vehicle gets stuck because the tracks are not designed for cars,” Belding said in an email.

The vehicle had to be towed off the tracks, which then had to be inspected, Belding said.

Belding referred questions about the driver to the Petaluma Police Department, which did not immediately return a request for more information.

SMART wanted to remind drivers to be alert near tracks and trains and to follow traffic laws, Belding said.
