St. Vincent plays for NCS championship

St. Vincent High School plays for the ultimate in its football world Saturday night when it faces St. Elizabeth of Oakland for the North Coast Section Class B championship in a 7 p.m. game at Santa Rosa High School.

The game marks the second time in three seasons St. Vincent has played in the NCS championship game. In 2005, the Mustangs won the NCS title.

Both teams are Mustangs. St. Vincent?s Mustangs, the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, defeated Point Arena, 34-18, in the semi-finals, while St. Elizabeth?s Mustangs, the No. 2 seed, won its semi-final game over South Fork, 20-7.

St. Vincent comes into the game with an 8-3 record after finishing second in the Class A North Central League I South. St. Elizabeth is 7-4. The East Bay Mustangs were 2-3 in the very strong Bay Football League.

St. Vincent stays mainly on the ground, led by sophomore running back Kris Farinha, who has 1,113 rushing yards for the season and senior Will Kesler.

The Mustangs? strong defense is led by linebackers Sean Keaney and Tommy Mathews.

The teams have played one common opponent. St. Vincent defeated Tomales, another Class B playoff participant, 15-8 in the opening game of the season. A week later, St. Elizabeth beat the Braves, 22-20. It was the only two losses for Tomales until it was beaten by South Fork, 14-12, in the first round of the playoffs.

St. Vincent last played St. Elizabeth in 1995, winning, 21-0.
