Wild, wild win for Casa in Egg Bowl

It all came down to the last 21 seconds.|

In one of the wildest high school football games, Egg Bowl or not, in recent seasons, Casa Grande quarterback Jadon Bosarge threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Carson Kerrigan with 21 seconds left in the game to give the Gauchos a 37-36 win over rival Petaluma Saturday afternoon.

Actually the touchdown left the Gauchos a point behind at 36-35. It was a two-point conversion run by Jordan Gramajo behind a muscular line surge that provided the game-winning points.

The touchdown and conversion climaxed an amazing 72-yard drive by Casa that began with just 1:01 left in the mind-blowing game.

It also came immediately following a determined six-minute 80-yard Petaluma drive that ended with Colton Prieto scoring from two yards out to send Trojan fans into a 36-29 tizzy.

That description defying finish, in turn, followed a teeter-totter tussle that had high points and low for both sides as they struggled undaunted through 48 minutes of total excitement.

Petaluma’s dominating ground game gave the Trojans a 14-0 lead on touchdown runs by Derrick Pomi and Colton Prieto before Bosarge connected with Nate Busse just 2.5 seconds from halftime to cut the Petaluma advantage to 14-7 at the intermission.

When Petaluma went up 21-7 on a 14-yard run by Pomi midway through the third period, it looked like the host Trojan had a grasp on the trophy.

But things were just getting interesting.

Neither team was able to stop or even contain the other as the clock wound down and the intensity mounted.

Gramajo scored for the Gauchos on a 1-yard burst, Garrett Freitas ran nine yards for a Trojan score; Alex Johnson broke a 45-yard scoring run for the Gauchos; and, following a fumble, Bosarge ran 11 yards for a Casa touchdown.

Instead of kicking what would have been a tying conversion, Casa sent the quarterback around end for a 2-point conversion and a 29-28 lead.

Still the emotion, now nearing hysteric levels, mounted as Petaluma chewed up most of what was remaining in the fourth period with its calculated 80-yard march.

As it turned out, most was not enough. The Trojans left a minute and a second too much on the scoreboard. A pair of Bosarge runs, the bomb to Kerrigan and Gramajo’s plunge gave the Egg Bowl trophy and bragging rights to Casa Grande.
