Northbound traffic on Highway 101 in Santa Rosa came to a stop early Friday evening when CHP officers and sheriff's deputies arrested a man at gunpoint who led officer on a chase before crashing his vehicle and coming to a stop in a traffic lane.
The incident began about 6 p.m. when an officer encountered a minivan pulled over on the center divide near Todd Road. The officer stopped to check the minivan, which had a trailer attached.
As the officer approached, the driver took off, said CHP Officer Nenad Gorenec. A chase ensued with the minivan reaching speeds of 80 miles an hour, Gorenec said.
When the unidentified driver reached the highway 12 interchange Highway 12, he crashed into the center divider and ended up in the highway. Several CHP officers and Sheriff's deputies quickly arrived. With weapons drawn, officers apprehended the man.
Gorenec said the CHP is still investigating the incident and that it was unclear why the man fled. Traffic was stopped for about 15 minutes, he said.
