A toddler run over by a car backing out of an east Petaluma driveway was flown to Oakland Children's Hospital late Wednesday morning with serious injuries, according to the CHP.

The 18-month-old girl was struck by her 18-year-old brother as he backed a 1999 Nissan out of a driveway on Highway 116 at Stage Gulch Road, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

The collision was reported at 11:33 a.m.

A CHP helicopter flew the young girl, accompanied by her mother, to the Bay Area hospital. As of noon, as the helicopter was approaching the hospital, the girl was reportedly in stable condition, Sloat said.

It wasn't clear initially how or why the toddler was in the driveway and behind the car, Sloat said.
