A crash into a Petaluma fire hydrant Sunday that broke open the hydrant releasing a torrent of water was caused by a suspected drunken driver, reported Petaluma police Monday.
Driver Joy Reynolds, 53, of Petaluma had been driving east on Bodega Avenue, heading into Petaluma, at about 9:10 a.m. when her black sedan crossed into the opposite lane.
The car then hit a sign post, breaking it off, and then the hydrant, said Petaluma Lt. Tim Lyons.
The impact caused the car to flip and she was trapped briefly inside the crumpled sedan.
The busted hydrant spewed a large amount of water before it was capped by city crews.
Reynolds was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for injuries and later arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, said Lyons.
