Police: Two arrested with gun, ammo, stolen mail in Petaluma
Petaluma police said they arrested on Tuesday two Antioch residents who were found with a stolen rifle, ammunition and mail allegedly swiped from Petaluma and other Bay Area cities in their vehicle.
Around 4:50 a.m., police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle in 1600 block of Corporate Circle, a business park off of Lakeville Highway, according to a news release from the agency.
When officers arrived, they found Artis Malcom Crenshaw, 26, and Malia Asenaca Hoopai, 24, in a vehicle in the area. It was determined that Crenshaw was on post-release community supervision with an active warrant, and was subject to a search, police said.
Police said a inspection of the vehicle turned up an unloaded, modified .22-caliber rifle allegedly stolen from Pittsburg on the floor of the front passenger seat, as well as various calibers of live ammunition and an empty 20-round magazine.
Ski masks and gloves were also found, authorities said.
A “large volume” of mail and identifications was also found in the vehicle, and detectives are currently working to follow up with the victims, authorities said.
Hoopai, who initially gave officers a false name, allegedly admitted to stealing mail for the purposes of identity theft, police said.
After officers positively identified Hoopai, she was found to have outstanding warrants for a firearms violation and providing false identification to peace officers, according to the agency.
Crenshaw and Hoopai were booked into Sonoma County Jail on a number of charges including grand theft of a firearm, unauthorized possession of personal information, manufacturing or selling a large capacity magazine and mail theft, according to the agency.
