An east Petaluma home caught fire early Monday, bringing in reports from neighbors of flames showing through the roof, according to a Redcom emergency dispatcher.

Petaluma firefighters responded to the 1500 block of Cerro Sonoma Circle at about 7 a.m. after getting multiple calls from neighbors about the house fire. They arrived to find flames spreading from the garage into the home, said Petaluma Battalion Chief Mike Medeiros.

The house is home to a couple and their dog. The husband had left for work and the wife discovered smoke coming from the garage, Medeiros said. The woman and family dog got out of the house safely.

Rancho Adobe and Cal Fire firefighters aided Petaluma on the effort. They knocked down the flames in about 30 minutes and stopped the fire from spreading to neighboring properties, Medeiros said.

Fire and smoke damage was significant throughout the home and the couple was displaced.

Both adults had smoked in the garage Monday morning and an investigation into the fire included whether smoking could be involved, he said. It appeared the fire started near a trash container near the home’s water heater.

Cerro Sonoma Circle is in southeast Petaluma, near Frates Road.
