Julie Simon makes customers feel lucky

Julie Simon does it all at Lucky’s. She bags groceries. She sweeps the floors. She even helps customers take their purchases to their cars, rain or shine.

But the best part about the job for Simon is making people happy.

“It’s the people, the customers,” said Simon, 52. “I know a lot of the customers. I can’t go anywhere in Petaluma where someone doesn’t know me.”

After growing up in Marin County, she moved to Sonoma County in 1986 and has been in Petaluma since 2008. She has worked at the Lucky’s on Petaluma Boulevard North for the past five years.

For her work, Simon was nominated as service person of the week.

But this isn’t the only accolade she has earned. Simon last year won the Lucky’s President’s award, given to the top employee at each store branch. Her people skills are what sets her apart.

“I meet a lot of people everyday,” she said. “I like getting to know people.”

In nominating her, Linda Mathies said Simon has taken the time to get to know her on a personal level.

“Julie is a bundle of energy and I adore her genuine interest in where I teach at Novato High School,” she wrote in a letter. “She is an alumnus of the school and we share funny stories about the campus.”

Simon is the fifth nominee to be chosen as Service Person of the Week for 2017.

Beginning March 2, readers will vote on which one should be crowned Service Person of the Year. The winner will be honored at the 2016 Petaluma Community Awards of Excellence, co-sponsored by the Argus-Courier and the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce, on April 20.
