Petaluma police are seeking the public’s help to track down a man suspected of damaging a parked car with an ax or a hatchet in what appeared to be a random act of violence last month.

In the early hours of Aug. 27, an unnamed victim parked his car near the corner of Western Avenue and Webster Street, returning to find that the hood had been damaged, police said in a news release.

Security camera footage showed another male driver pull up alongside the victim’s parked car around 1:40 a.m. before allegedly hitting the vehicle’s hood twice with an ax or a hatchet and then driving away, police said.

Police believe the incident was random, with no known motivation.
