It was tougher this time around, but St. Vincent High School’s varsity football team remained undefeated in North Central League II play with a 26-0 win at Calistoga.

St. Vincent’s Mustangs, 68-13 winners over Calistoga’s Wildcats the first time around the NCL II schedule, found touchdowns harder to come by this time around, leading just 7-0 at the half, the result of four costly turnovers.

A 19-point third-quarter explosion gave St. Vincent its fourth straight league win and evened its overall record at 4-4.

After a scoreless first quarter, St. Vincent blinked the scoreboard to life in the second period, capping a 45-yard, three-play drive with a 24-yard touchdown run by George Sammon. It was the first of three Sammon touchdowns in the game.

Able to hang onto the football in the second half, St. Vincent took charge in the third quarter.

It began with quarterback Dominic Pedersen scoring from 10 yards out.

Pederson connected with Sammon on a dramatic 82-yard pass play. Sammon then capped off his big day with a 3-yard scoring run.

St. Vincent reserves played much of the second half, as the Mustang defense contained the Wildcats.

Paul Gregorian plugged up the middle and finished with a game-high 10 tackles for the Mustangs. Sean Healy and Jas Murray had eight tackles each and Justin Sablik seven. Jordan Pech was credited with 2.5 tackles for loss.

The shutout was the second in the last three games for the Mustangs. So far in league play they have outscored opponents 188-19.

For the game, Sammon ran for 127 yards in 14 carries and caught three passes for 122 yards. It marked the seventh time in his career he has rushed for more than 100 yards and the second time he has had both a 100-plus rushing and 100-plus yard passing game.

Pederson completed 10 of 16 passes for 220 yards, and has now surpassed 1,000 yards passing for the season.
