The men’s lightweight 8 team finished third to highlight North Bay Rowing Club’s strong performance in the prestigious Head of the American Regatta on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova.

The event attracted 62 rowing clubs from as far away as Washington and Arizona to compete in the 5-kilometer time trials.

“It was a great day for racing,” said NBRC coach Will Whalen. “Conditions started out pretty rainy, but by the time racing began, the water was perfect.”

The NBRC’s Men’s 8 lightweight team of Zack Mujumdar, Will Griffin, Dalton DeFord, Florian Horber, John Gause, Elek Sasaway, Shane Lowery, Nicholas Caruso and Austin Sides is believed the first 8-oared NBRC team in recent memory to finish in the top three at a major regatta.

The men’s four team of Bradley Hogin, Matias Kunzman, Julian Honey, Ryan Cardiff and Ben Hom was the fastest entry from Northern California, losing only to teams from Southern California and Washington.

NBRC also received strong effort from the Women’s 4 team of Stella Brown, Madeline Wagner, Sam Lamos, Sam Wakerlin and Natasha Kinmount, and also from Kelly Galten in the Women’s 1 competition.

“Overall, I am very happy with where we are as a team right now,” said Whalen. “The kids have been working hard and the results are showing. We have kids who first got into a boat in September and now are racing and doing really well.”
