NBRC men’s junior and women’s junior teams debut

The North Bay Rowing Club continued its autumn of success in Head of the America located on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova. Sixty-five teams from across the country participated in the 5K time trial. The event marked the first race for both the NBRC’s Womens Junior. and Mens Junior Novice squads.

“It was great to get the first race for all of the new rowers,” said NBRC coach Will  Whalen.  “Many had not picked up an oar before September, and now they are competing.”

The Novice 8+’s competed against similar squads from across the region and both finished mid pack. “We stacked up well against squads of similar size, but behind the larger teams,” noted Whalen. “It was a great first experience, and I am looking forward to their progress in the coming weeks, and seeing how we do at the Head of the Lagoon.”

The varsity crews were slightly off the prior performances this fall, finishing behind several teams they had previously beaten.

“We need to step up the intensity of our training a bit,” said Whalen, “We started the fall very strong, and the last few weeks were not the best practices. We race like we train so we need to pick it up.”

The club competed in 13 events, including five events for the Masters squad. The lone gold medal came in the Women’s Master Novice Four event.

The final race of the fall distance season will be Sunday at “Head of the Lagoon” in Foster City.
