Busy week for Casa Grande girls

Last week was a busy week for the Casa Grande High School girls basketball team. The Lady Gauchos started the week with a point explosion and ended it with a tough loss. In between, they defensed their way to a thrilling victory.

The week began with Casa’s biggest scoring outburst of the season in a 71-54 home-court victory over Rancho Cotate.

Casa jumped out to a 14-8 opening-quarter lead and never trailed, although the Gauchos never put the game away until they rallied for 21 points in the final period.

Sophomore Hannah Sullivan led a list of Casa point makers with 18. Cassidy McKinney scored 17, while Mia Cain added 14, Caty Millar 10 and Joy Jovick eight. Cain captured 14 rebounds and Jovick pulled down eight.

Camille Spackman scored 16 points for Rancho Cotate.

On the road at Windsor on a stormy night, the Gauchos used defense for a 39-35 victory.

Windsor led, 32-28, after three periods, but the Gaucho defense held the Jaguars to just three points in the final period to pull out the win.

Sullivan and Cain each scored 11 points for Casa.

Back home Saturday afternoon, the Gauchos lost a heart breaker, falling to Ukiah, 52-51.

Sullivan led a list of Casa scorers with 15 points, with McKinney scoring 10. Claire Killian, Millar, Cain and Joy Jovick each added six, with Jovick pulling down 15 rebounds.

The loss was the first after four wins in North Bay League for the Gauchos who are 10-5 overall.
