St.Vincent High School’s youthful Mustangs continued to have trouble acclimating themselves to the talented world of North Central League I football Friday night, losing at Clear Lake, 48-13.

The loss was the second following an opening non-league win and second straight in their new league for the Mustangs. The win was the second against a loss for the host Cardinals and their first in NCL I play.

There were a few hopeful signs for St. Vincent.

In the first quarter, Tony Garcia-Bedoya put St. Vincent on the scoreboard with an exciting 61-yard touchdown run.

In the final round, the Mustangs fashioned an impressive 80-yard drive, scoring on a 14-yard pass from Will Davis to Mike Davis.

Unfortunately for St. Vincent, before Garcia-Bedoya could break his long run for a Mustangs’ touchdown, Clear Lake had already counted two scores of its own, and in between the first and second St. Vincent scores, Clear Lake scored five more touchdowns.

The Cardinals’ Alex Adams took advantage of the inexperienced St. Vincent secondary to pass for two first-quarter touchdowns to give the Cardinals a quick lead they never came close to giving up.

Garcia-Bedoya had a big game for the Mustangs with 134 rushing yards on just six carries. In addition to his 61-yard scoring run, he broke a 55-yard sprint in the second half. The two long gainers helped make him the second Mustang back to rush for more than 100 yards this season, following Michael Davis, who carried for 270 yards in the season-opening game against Elsie Allen. Davis was held to just 28 running yards on six plays but did catch four passes for 38 yards and the touchdown from his brother, Will Davis.

Clear Lake, led by Adams, scored three touchdowns in the second quarter for a 34-6 halftime lead, and tacked on two more third quarter scores.

St. Vincent helped the Cardinal cause with four turnovers, two on bad snaps.

Adams was just 6 of 16 passing, but threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Jake Jackson run for two touchdowns.

Defensively, there were some bright spots for the Mustangs. Nick Murphy continued his outstanding defensive year for St. Vincent with 11 tackles, while Brian Giron had eight. Mike Davis made six tackles, defensed three passes, and had an interception. Will Davis made six tackles.
