FALL SPORTS: Sonoma Academy hands SV first league soccer loss

St. Vincent lost its first North Central League II match of the season last week, falling to nemesis Sonoma Academy, the team that beat the Mustangs for the North Coast Section championship last season, 3-1.

McKenna Wilson Kay, working off an assist from Grace Hosbein, scored the St. Vincent goal.

Gabby Ziemer, Sally Ziemer and Katie Johansen scored for Sonoma Academy.

Maria Carrillo’s Lizete Ponce scored twice in the second half to lead the NBL powerhouse Pumas to a 2-0 win over Casa Grande.

Kitana Gonzalez and Brynn Howard each set up one of Ponce’s goals with assists.

Casa Grande came up with one of its best offensive efforts of the season, shooting by Rancho Cotate, 5-0, in a match played at Casa.

Cizzela Carranza led the offensive surge with two goals. Cassie Walsh, Angelina Gonzalez and Elizabeth Martin scored one each with Mia Santander and Martin each providing assists.

Goalie Cassie Bailon recorded the shutout for Casa.

Girls golf

Sarah Jane and Lilly Catarozoli continued to play well, but they weren’t able to carry Petaluma to a win against Healdsburg in a Sonoma County League match played at Rooster Run, where Healdsburg prevailed, 258-277.

Sarah Jane shot a 44 and Lilly a 46 for the Trojans. They were followed by Olivia Zimmerman with a 53, Teresa McGaughey with a 66 and Kalea Howe with a 68.

In a 265-274 loss to El Molino at Rooster Run, Jane shot a 43 and Lilly a 45. They were followed by Howe with a 60 and Zimmerman and McGaughey each with a 63.

A first North Bay League victory continued to elude Casa Grande as the Gauchos lost on their home course at Adobe Creek to Ukiah, 278-321.

Rose Dagnino led Casa with a 60, while Mia Cain shot a 63. Kaelee Downing, Delia Reif and Amanda Porteous each shot 67.

Dagnino shot a solid 57 at Oakmont West, but it wasn’t enough to give Casa a win as the Gauchos lost to Santa Rosa, 293-328.

Dagnino was followed by Cain with a 63, Downing with a 68, Porteous with a 68 and Reif with a 72.

Maiah Lucas took medalist honors for Santa Rosa with a 54.

Volleyball

Petaluma rallied to win a four-set thriller over Analy in a battle of SCL unbeaten teams.

The teams split the first two sets, with Petaluma winning, 26-24, but Analy rallying for a 25-20 win. The Trojans prevailed in the pivotal third set, 25-23, before putting the Tigers away, 25-11.

Sianna DeCarli led the Petaluma win with 18 kills, while Juliana Bertolucci had 33 assists.

The Trojans followed up that victory with a 3-0 win over Healdsburg.

Working off the passing of libero Hannah Wheless, Adrianna Poore and Claire Tuscher, the Trojans won, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21.

Casa Grande’s improving Gauchos made Maria Carrillo work, but finally lost in four sets in a match played at Maria Carrillo.

The host Pumas won the first two sets, 25-17, 25-19, but Casa Grande shocked the Pumas in the third set, 25-12, before Maria Carrillo closed out the NBL win, 25-20.

Kylie Brandt had a big game for Casa with 11 kills. Kap Mahdavi added 11 kills and Alauna Ricco had 17 digs. Payton Jones had 23 digs and served seven aces for Maria Carrillo.

St. Vincent continued undefeated in North Central League II play, sweeping Upper Lake, 25-19, 25-13, 25-12.

Ali Fetter had 18 assists and six kills in an excellent all-around game for the Mustangs. Sarah Calabrese had 14 kills and served five aces. Analise Silva provided eight kills and Eva Clark contributed 11 assists.

Girls tennis

Petaluma won three of four singles matches to earn a tough 4-3 Sonoma County League win over Piner in a match played on the Trojan courts.

Petaluma No. 1 Grace Davis, along with teammates Alaisa Barone and Christine Lang, were singles winners.

Mary Mazano joined Diana Trueblood to defeat Piner’s Cecilia Martin and Maritza Perez, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles to clinch the team win for Petaluma.
