Drama 'Deep Dark Canyon' starts with hunting accident

''Deep Dark Canyon," a new feature-length independent film by husband-and-wife team Abe Levy and Silver Tree, opens today at the Roxy Stadium 14 theater in Santa Rosa.

Originally titled "Lawless," the movie was shot entirely in Sonoma County, primarily in Guerneville and along the Russian River.

The co-directors have roots in Sonoma County; Levy is from Petaluma and Silver from Guerneville. They now live in the Laurel Canyon area in Los Angeles.

The film opens with a hunting accident that kills the mayor of a rural town dynasty. The two young brothers responsible, played by Nick Eversman, from ABC's "Missing" and "The Runaways;" and Spencer Treat Clark from "Gladiator" and "Unbreakable;" find themselves handcuffed together and on the run.

Their pursuers include their father who is the town sheriff, played by Ted Levine, who portrayed Buffalo Bill in "The Silence of the Lambs" and Capt. Leland Stottlemeyer on the "Monk" TV series.

Also caught up in the chase is the sheriff's deputy, played by Martin Starr of "Freaks and Geeks" and "End of the World" television series.

The directors and some of the actors will conduct a question-and-answer session after the 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday showing at the Roxy.

Before making her feature film-directing debut with Levy on "Deep Dark Canyon," Tree was a script supervisor and worked with directors Quentin Tarantino, Jon Avnet and Randy Zisk.

Silver also wrote and produced the television films "One of Our Own," aired on HBO, and "The Aviary," about her earlier career as a flight attendant, both directed by Levy.
