Petaluma runners sweep by Casa in Sonoma County League showdown

Petaluma swept away what may have been its only challenge to Sonoma County League cross country dominance last week, defeating rival Casa Grande with both its boys and girls teams.

Petaluma's boys won handily as expected, coming within one place of a perfect score in a 16-43 win.

Running on Casa's home course at the Martinelli Ranch, Petaluma zipped home the meet's first four runners, with Forrest Schaffer, Ryan Douglas and Kevin Poteracke all timed in 17:28 and Clark Bernard fourth in 17:39.

Casa's Austin Minnick managed to break up the Petaluma pack, finishing fifth in 17:42, with Noah Forrey completing the Petaluma scoring in 18:01.

Casa's Dayrn Cubba was seventh in 18:41 and Ben Tarango eighth in 18:55.

Petaluma's young girls team had what coach Jim Lynch called, "a breakthrough race," defeating Casa, 20-41.

"The girls ran absolutely incredibly," Lynch said.

Casa Grande's Ashley Moffett won in 20:48, but the next six runners were all Lady Trojans, with Kirby Franklin second in 21:07, Francesca Honey third in 21:50, Hailey Lynch fourth in 21:56, Maddie Crum fifth in 22:02 and Audrey Behen sixth in 22:10. Right behind the scoring girls, Angelica Hernandez was seventh in 22:11.

Petaluma's junior varsity boys had the first three runners and five of the top six to win, 17-39.

Seth Yungert and Sebastian Bognar were both timed in 18:39, with Yungert awarded first and Bognar second. Troy Gaub was third in 19:28.

Casa Grande's Adam Lundquist was fourth in 20:20, followed by Petaluma's final counting runners, Nick Friedrichsen in 20:36 and Brandon Garner in 20:37.

Petaluma had the first three finishing junior varsity girls and four of the top five, but lacked a fifth runner and Casa Grande was awarded the team win.
