Petaluma’s Wong second in SCL tennis

Petaluma High School’s outstanding No. 1 tennis player, Nathan Wong, took his season right down to the last serve of excitement last weekend, losing the Sonoma County League singles championship to Healdsburg’s Trevor Cook in three exciting sets.

In the championship match, Cook won the first set, 6-3, but Wong came back to take the second, 6-4, before losing the third set in a heart breaker, 7-5.

To get to the finals, Wong defeated Dylan Bearg of Sonoma Valley, 6-1, 6-4; downed teammate Adam Volk, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and then eliminated Matt Mckale of Sonoma Valley, 6-3, 6-0.

Before meeting Wong, Volk stopped John Dow of Healdsburg in the first round, 6-2, 6-0.

Petaluma’s Zach Leno reached the semifinals, defeating Liam Handron of Sonoma Valley, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 and Arlo David of El Molino, 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals. The end came in a tough 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 loss to Cook in the semifinals.

The Petaluma doubles team of Hayden Dennis and Alex Dodd reached the semifinals before losing to Ben Regoli and Miles Pimentel of Sonoma Valley, the ultimate winners, 6-1, 6-3. The Petaluma duo defeated Jolly Greer and William DeGroot of El Molino, 7-5, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

The Petaluma team of Carlos Bugarin and John Camp lost to Sonoma Valley in the first round.
