STEM Day for kids part of IndyCar weekend

Kids get a chance to show engineering skills at STEM Day at Sonoma Raceway.|

Speedway Children’s Charities partnership with Sonoma Raceway and Verizon, will host STEM Day at the Raceway free for young learners during the Grand Prix of Sonoma Verizon IndyCar Series season finale on Sept. 15.

STEM Day at the Raceway is an opportunity for students to engage and participate in innovative, hands-on activities and demonstrations involving science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related to the racing industry.

Students will be tasked to build and race a balloon-powered car, which they can take home. The activity is developed to help students learn about the science of engineering design and kinetic and potential energy (suitable for young children).

In addition, students will have the opportunity to meet and learn from engineers and racing experts from various INDYCAR racing teams during a special question and answer session, participate in a Pit Tour, view demonstrations and more. Students and guests are also invited to enjoy the on-track racing and race-day activities around the facility.

All the activities are suitable for students ages 5-12. Entry to the raceway for children 12-under is free.

In addition, each parent/guardian/chaperone will receive one adult ticket per pre-registered child. The event will take place from 10-11 a.m. in Sunoco Victory Lane.

All the materials required for the activities will be provided. Participants need only bring themselves and their brain power. Limited spots are available. Registration closes Sept. 13. STEM Day at the Raceway is part of the Verizon IndyCar Series championship weekend at Sonoma Raceway, Sept. 14-16. The Grand Prix of Sonoma will decide the series champion on Sept. 16, but there will be plenty of racing to enjoy on Sept. 15, including INDYCAR practice and qualifying, as well as featured races for the Historic Trans Am Series, the Formula Car Challenge series and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA.
